Annual Ed McFadden Memorial Scholarship Tournament and Tuskegee Airmen Appreciation Day!

Annual Ed McFadden Memorial Scholarship Tournament & Tuskegee Airmen Appreciation Day! Del Val’s first solo scholarship tournament was tremendous! Gentlemen – start your engines! The new logo water bottles a big hit! Lots of prizes and awards given away! The Tuskegee Airmen ceremony hits a little bit of a snag! A special thanks goes out to all Del Valians & guests who benevolently gave to the Del Val Scholarship Fund! Annual Ed McFadden Memorial Scholarship Tournament & Tuskegee Airmen Appreciation Day!
Del Val’s Maiden Voyage as host of The Ed McFadden Scholarship Tournament was a smashing success!! The turnout was slightly lighter than anticipated due to numerous reasons, but the spirit was good, fun & networking was great and the golf was tough at the challenging Odessa Golf Course! The course played tough this day as the trees, strong winds and abundance of bunkers made life difficult for all despite the fact it was a scramble format. The first 3 low gross teams got awards for all their troubles!
On an ideal day for golf with temperatures in the mid-70’s and slightly overcast skies, a contingent of 30 golfers made the trek to the awesome Odessa National Golf Club!
The best score of the day was turned in by the foursome of Reggie Pollitt, Raymond Greir, Chandler Horton and Arnold Young. Arnold’s group put on a great display of driving and putting to post a score of 63.

There was a 3 -way tie for second place with scores of 65. The places were determined by the tie-breaker which was based on scores recorded on the toughest handicapped holes. After that tabulation, the results were as follows:

  • Second place went the foursome of Jim Dillard, Willie Flynn, Joe Johnson and Anton Burnette. They played a solid round and carded a 65.
  • Third place went to the foursome of Tony Wright, Pete Goodwin, John Jones, Ed Wilcox. They also had a nice round and posted the 65 score too.

The team left out in the cold but played a good round was the foursome of Jim Congleton, John St. Omer, Shawn Congleton, Herb Morris.
The Scarabis Golf Club from the consortium sent a foursome to the participate in and support the Del Val Scholarship Tournament. A lot of the other consortium clubs, including DC Pro Duffers and Nova Pro Duffers and the DC and Nova Pro Duffers Chapters had schedule conflicts but all have pledged their support and schedule coordination for next year’s tournament.
So, we’re only going to get bigger and better!!! Next Year Will Be Massive!!

Important Note:
The Scarabis Club has invited Del Val Members to play in their Charity Tournament on Saturday, May 19, at an outstanding golf course in Virginia called The 1557 Golf Club! A splendid golf course! We are looking to take down at least 2 foursomes. If interested, let me know at Scarabis is real supportive of our events, so let’s reciprocate!
Tuskegee Airman and Del Valian Ted Ramsey displays his official Tuskegee blazer and “Wings”!
On his way to the Tuskegee Airmen Ceremony in his honor, Ted Ramsey chose to take the scenic Route and drove nearly to Virginia on Route 1 instead of Townsend, DE. He finally got his bearings and made it back to Odessa National. Only problem was, it was so late that everyone had already left except a few. The members that were still at the course received Ted and presented him with his Lifetime Achievement Award and gift baskets made in his and Tom Mayfield Sr’s honor.
Ted was nice enough to stay an hour or so and explained to the ones remaining, Mike Holland, Glenn Dobson, Arnold Young and Guests Jerry Detweiler and Vince Storti, the complete story and his history in The Tuskegee Airmen Squadron. Ted is a “Wealth of Knowledge about his personal Tuskegee Experience.” if you ever get a chance, pull him aside and ask him about the airmen. He would only be too delighted to tell you. His pride at being a Tuskegee Airmen is boundless!

The other Tuskegee Airmen, Tom Mayfield Sr. was hospitalized last week and was supposed to be released yesterday, Sunday; therefore, he was unable to attend. Tom’s Del Val Lifetime Achievement Award and Gift Basket was taken to him by Gil Spriggs.
Thanks Ted and Tom!!!! Job well done!!!!
A special thanks goes out to the tournament committee who did a stellar job in putting on the tournament! The TC is a well-oiled machine! It takes a lot of work to on this type of event. And the tournament committee was up to the challenge, again! Excellent job!

The 2012 National Spring Fling Tournament
The Spring Fling Was Fantastic! The Orlando Chapter put on an absolutely fabulous event. Some “National Tournaments weren’t as good as this year’s Spring Fling. 108 golfers descended on the beautiful PGA Village!
PGA Village is a first class facility all the way! The PGA Village did not disappoint.
There as a threat of rain in the forecast the entire weekend but not once did it rain during our rounds! It rained before and after, but never during. It was a miracle!
The courses were in absolutely unbelievable good condition with greens running at 12 on the stimp meter which made putting an adventure. If that wasn’t enough, they had bunkers, bunkers & more bunkers. And these weren’t just ordinary bunkers, these were some “mean” bunkers both pot and the regular variety that were deep and had high lips! You had to stay out of them! You could spend half your day in those bunkers!
Del Val’s “Fab Five” did its thing in Port St. Lucie. Everybody got in the act! Arnold Young had a good round on day 2 shooting a nice score of 77 on the P.B. Dye Course and an 83 on the tricky Wanamaker Course Friday.
John Jones had his game clicking at PGA Village shooting a solid round of 88 at the tough Wanamaker Course on day 1 and super score of 81 at the Dye Course. John ended up in 2nd Place in his flight in the 2-Day Quota Tournament. Fred Robinson, Jimmy Congleton and Herb Morris all won skins in their flights.
We had another Hole-In-One! Elmer Mosley from The Memphis Chapter recorded a Hole-In-One on Hole # 13, 150 Yard Par 3. He Sank A 6 Iron Shot!
The Del Val Crew went to a Super Fish Restaurant Friday night in Jensen Beach and was the center of attraction in the busy restaurant. Exceptionally Fresh Fish! If ever in Jensen Beach, FL, Try It!
Complete field scores will be sent when received.

The 2011 golf season underway Saturday at Ballamor!
A fantastic day of golf! A great time was had at Chickies & Pete’s Restaurant following golf!

The early bird special tournament Saturday at Ballamor was a gallant kick-off to the 2011 Del Val golf season! It was a nice sunny day with temperatures in the mid to upper 50’s and the wind quite blustery which made club selection an adventure!

A standing-room only throng of 26 golfers (2 no-shows) descended upon the spectacular Ballamor Country Club. The course was in nice condition with plenty of sand traps and lakes. Hitting your target was at premium. Everyone was eager to get the 2011 season going after a long and snowy winter!

Following golf, a large number of DelValians made the trek down the street to the Chickie & Pete’s Restaurant in Egg Harbor Township where wings, crab fries, beer and mussels were being downed in abundance! Lots of fun and fellowship was had at C&P’s. Maybe not so much for Harold Archer who had to withstand the verbal jabs of Greg Ackles, Kurt Phillips and Guy Williams. Harold also received plenty of golf elicit suggestions. Must have been an interesting round for that group!

The windy weather made matters a little more difficult than normal. That coupled with the anticipated “winter rust” made scores a little higher than usual.

The outstanding performance of the day was turned in by the steady and solid Jesse bell. Jesse shook off most of his rust and came in with a respectable score of 93 for a net 73. His net 73 was good for first place in GCR points this day! Jesse will be one of our players we look to for a big year. Good job Jesse!

Another solid performance was turned in by the ever-improving guy Stewart. Guy also played a solid round and notched an early season score of 98 for a net 74. His net 74 garnered him 2nd place GCR points.

The best score of the day was turned in by Arnold young who played a decent round to post a score of 81 for a net 73. His 73 earned him first place GCR points. Shawn Congleton had the next best score carding a score of 84. Shawn picked up a R-11 driver on Friday and was hitting it well. He and partner john St. Omer, somehow upset Arnold and Mike Holland in an inter-group matchup.

Presidente’ Mike Holland played a nice round and notched a score of 87. Aaron green, playing with his guests, also showed little effect from the long winter and posted a 89.

Like they say in Carolina, the weather couldn’t be “fina”! On a spectacular indian summer day with temperatures approaching 67 degrees and the sky crystal clear, 28 Del Valians and guest descended upon the Ramblewood Country Club for the last event of the 2010 season, the Turkey Shoot Tournament. The course was in decent condition with the greens in much better shape than our last visit and the fairways were in pretty good shape. The “leaf rule” was in effect and boy, players took full advantage! There were some sizeable winnings in the skins pots too!
Turkeys were on the line this day at the Annual Turkey Shoot Tournament. Top 12 low net scores won a gift card to purchase a Tom Turkey for Thanksgiving!

1. Jesse Bell net 67
2. Greg Ackles 67
3. Herb Morris 69
4. Anton Burnette 69
5. Jim Congleton 70
6. Fred Robinson 70
7. Bill Gardiner 72
8. John Jones 72
9. Glenn Dobson 73
10. Ed Wilcox 73
11. Kurt Phillips 73
12. Larry Brown 74

2010 Turkey ShootThere were some great scores posted at Ramblewood this day. The best amongst them was turned in by the hot-shooting senior Larry Brown. Larry played an awesome round of golf with a birdie on the white #2 hole and a 38 on the front nine! Larry outplayed them all this day! Great job Larry! Next was Shawn Congleton, still hitting them a long way, and came in with a nice score of 81. Arnold Young, who struggled most of the day, was next with a score of 83 shooting a 38 on the back nine. Guest and ex-Del Valian Erwin Smith posted a score of 84.

John Jones, controlling his ball better, played a decent round and carded a 86. Also carding an 86 was senior Herb Morris. Herb played a terrific round of golf this day. Bill Gardiner, returning to the tour, shot a nice score of 87. Anton Burnette had a great round and came in with a score of 87. Tom Mayfield Jr., getting his groove back, posted a nice score of 88. Kurt Phillips posted a solid score with an 89.

The Tournament Committee sends a BIG THANKS to all Del Valians for a tremendous and special 2010 golf season.  See You in 2011!

Del Val vs. FreewayIt was a great day of golf and fellowship! A contingent of 45 golfers showed up at the Pickering Valley Golf Club for the grudge match between Del Val and Freeway Golf Clubs! There were sunny blue skies and temperatures in the mid 60’s but, the talk of the day was the “wind”! The wind was blowing real hard all day long with gusts exceeding 30 miles per hour at times. The gusty wind had an adverse effect on the level of golf this day making low line drive shots a “must”. Get it too high and watch the wind knock it down or just take it away. But despite the windy conditions, Del Valians went to work and rose to the occasion to defeat Freeway. Del Val came to play!! Freeway didn’t know what hit them. Freeway brought all their “ringers”, but it still wasn’t enough. Del Val was just too strong and way too skilled for Freeway.
When you win like this, you get a lot of outstanding performances. And Del Val got outstanding performances from a host of players. Going into the match, the goal was to win 3 points in your match. And we had plenty players bringing home all the bacon! This ended up being the deciding factor!
There were exceptional and dazzling performances by many Del Valians! Del Val had 6 sweeps! Leading the sweeps was Shawn Congleton. Shawn put on a terrific display of golf bringing home 3 points while shooting a day’s best score of 77, an awesome score under the conditions! The wind didn’t bother Shawn! Shawn defeated the Freeway Club champion enroute to his 3-0 sweep! Shawn brought home 3! Great job Shawn!
Del Val’s “Dynamic Duo” came home with a two 3-0 sweeps! Greg Ackles and Jim Congleton, playing together, continue to run roughshod over any opponents put in their paths. Greg and Jim went undefeated this year in inter-club matches. Awesome! And this day was no different. Greg completely dominated his Freeway’s Lorenzo Upshaw from the start. Greg stated, “The match was over after five holes on the front and four holes on the back!” it was complete and total domination! Greg brought home 3!
Not to be outdone, Jimmy C jumper all over his guy too! Jimmy completed dismantled Morris Bracy early and often. Morris never won a hole the entire match and Jimmy C just coasted. This match was over early too! Jimmy C brought home 3! (Just an observation, but the Congleton Clan went undefeated and unscored upon and brought home 6 points! Must be something in the food over at the Congleton’s! Nice job!)
Mike Holland also joined in the fray! Mike, always a great tournament player, again put on a marvelous exhibition of competitive golf. Sometimes it’s more important how you perform when you’re not playing your best golf. Despite not having his “A” game this day, Mike still managed to win the big holes and defeated his solid opponent George Bridges in a 3-0 sweep! Mike is a true competitor! Mike brought home 3! Good job Mike!
Dependable, unflappable and tournament tough, Fred Robinson, continued his fine inter-club match play. Fred also went undefeated in 2010 season in inter-club match play. Fred beat his freeway opponent Wilson Brewster so bad, he didn’t even want to turn in his card! Fred put on a stupendous show of tournament golf and completely annihilated his guy 3-0! Fred brought home 3! Super, Fred!
In what has to qualify as bonafide brilliance, the performance of the day, Dennis Myles came through in the clutch for Del Val under real tough circumstances. Dennis’ Del Val playing partner did not show leaving Dennis pitted against 2 Freeway players instead of one. Dennis didn’t have to take on this responsibility to play against 2 Freeway players, but he did! And did he ever! In playing against 2 Freeway players, Dennis had 6 points hanging out there in the balance, make or break! This was a demanding chore. But Dennis played like a true Del Val champion and came home with 4 out of the possible 6 points! Now that was outstanding! Dennis’ performance was pivotal in Del Val defeating Freeway this day. Had this match-up gone the other way, it would have been difficult for Del Val to win the tournament! Absolutely exceptional display of championship golf Dennis! He brought home 4! Dennis went over and beyond the call of duty! Awesome Dennis!Another superb performance was put on by prime-time player Herb Morris. Herb also plays these tournaments well and did against Freeway. Herb completely took apart Freeway’s Sam Hudson who had a 13 handicap! Herb was unfazed by his lofty 13 handicap and went to work. When the dust settled, Herb beat him like a bad habit. Herb brought home 2 1/2 points and was upset he didn’t get all 3! Herb also won the longest drive for seniors contest. When asked, how he won? Herb replied, “his ball landed in an area where no one had ever been or could reach”. Fantastic job Herb!
Congratulations to all Del Valians who put forth a dynamic and valiant effort to beat the Freeway Golf Club! Complete field results attached.
There was a jubiliant post-round celebration at the home of Glenn Dobson. The Dobson’s had a nice spread of food and libation for all. Attending the festivities was Jesse Bell, John Jones, Fred Robinson, Charles Williams, Greg Ackles, Aaron Green, Herb Morris, Mike Holland, Arnold Young and host Glenn Dobson.
The food was absolutely fantastic. The appetizers, spaghetti and meatballs, salad, cakes and pastries were delightful. Herb Morris, who apparently has taken over kitchen supervisory duties for all Del Val post round revelry, was rationing out 3 meatballs for everybody else’s plate and a minimum of 9 for his plate!
Everyone watched the Phillies game and Ohio State football game. Most had to endure Greg Ackle’s adulation of the victorious San Francisco Giants. Somehow he’s a SF Giants fan. We were going to tie him in the chair with duct tape if he didn’t stop cheering for the giants. John Jones was a little rusty with the TV remote. Charles Williams was in shock on how sedate his round of golf was. Mike Holland was telling everyone about his 17 strikeout pitching performance in little league baseball. Fred Robinson was checking his stocks and fussing at Jimmy Rollins for striking out…again! Jesse Bell was playing with Glenn’s dog and really enjoying the good spaghetti dish, Herb Morris was blaming Mike Holland for eating all the coconut cake even though “he” was the one who ate it. Aaron Green was late after trying to jump start Anton’s car in the Pickering Valley parking lot.

A good time was had by all. The Dobsons’ had to kick everybody out at midnite.
Thanks to the Dobson family for hosting Del Val!
Tom Mayfield, Sr

In the “IT MUST BE TOLD” department, it cannot go un-noticed that sexy senior citizen, Tom Mayfield Sr., brought home 1-1/2 points in the Del Val vs. Freeway Golf Club match Saturday at Pickering Valley! Tom, trying get the match over with quickly, jumped all over his opponent, John Narvacz, on the front nine. As Tom said, “I TOOK HIM APART”! Then Tom just missed getting a full 2 points as he and John played even overall. Great job Tom Sr.! Don’t we all wish that we could bring home 1 1/2 points at the young age of 93 in an inter-club match! Congrats Tom Sr. On a job well done!

Wow! What an awesome time everyone had at the 2010 Ryder Cup Tournament! The Ryder Cup was fantastic! The tournament was held at the really nice Five Ponds Golf Club. The weather was absolutely perfect for golf! Not a cloud in the sky and the temperatures in the high 60’s! Wonderful day! Despite all the rain on Thursday, the course was in great shape with beautiful greens and lots of water hazards! They don’t call it ‘Five Ponds’ for nothing!
The 2010 Ryder Cup Tournament was the largest since we started the tournament, 3 years ago! The tournament was very competitive this year! Both teams were determined to bring home the trophy! The team captains feverishly assembled the teams they thought would bring them to victory. The teams were:
Shawn Congleton, Captain
John Jones, Captain
Arnold Young
Herb Morris
Elbert Maxwell
Jerry Sehested
Armondo Burnette
Charles Williams
Dennis Myles
Aaron Green
Anton Burnette
Jesse Bell
2010 Ryder Cup Tournament
Mike Holland, Captain
Glenn Dobson, Captain
Jim Congleton, Honorary Captain
Larry Brown
Dennis Dones
Kurt Phillips
Gerry Cousins
Craig Jones
Fred Robinson
Guy Stewart
Guy Williams
Greg Ackles

There were some great matches and close matches:

Mike Holland / Guy Wiliams
USA: Shawn Congleton / John Jones
This was a tough match. The 4 ball game was halved, with the USA winning the last hole to gain the split. Europe came back in the alternate shot game and itself won the last hole to win and gain one point and the scramble was halved. Word had it that Mike Holland was putting lights all day for Europe. Great match won by Europe 2-1.

Glenn Dobson / Greg Ackles
USA: Jesse Bell / Anton Burnette
This match turned into the most volatile match of the day. The USA team played well and won the 4-ball game winning the last hole to gain 1 point but Glenn & Greg rallied to win the alternate shot 2 up and the scramble game 2 up to give Europe a 2-1win.

Dennis Dones / Kurt Phillips
USA: Dennis Myles / Arnold Young
This was another relatively tightly contested match. The two teams halved the 4-ball game with Kurt Phillips playing well but Dennis Myles and a clutch birdie putt to win hole #6 to halve the 4-ball game. From there team USA assumed control and won the alternate shot and scramble games to win 2 1/2 points for USA.

Craig Jones / Guy Stewart
USA: Jerry Sehested / Aaron Green
This match was the “swing” match of the day. The Europe team got out fast and won the 4 ball game 2 up to gain 1 point. The alternate shot game was close with Europe needing and getting a win on the last hole to gain another point. The scramble was even going to the last hole when Guy Stewart sank a nice 15 foot birdie putt to win the scramble game and gain a 3-0 sweep for Europe.

Gerry Cousins / Jim Congleton
USA: Herb Morris / Elbert Maxwell
This was another tight match that could have gone either way. The 2 teams halved the 4-ball game with USA winning the final hole to a split. Herb and Elbert dominated the alternate shot game to gain a1point. But Europe came back to win the last scramble hole to half that game. USA win the match 2-1. Great match guys!

Europe: Fred Robinson / Larry Brown
USA: Charles Williams / Armondo Burnette
This was yet another great match! The two teams halved the 4-ball game for a split. Europe won the alternate shot game winningthe last hole to gain 1 point. But inundated, the USA team came back strong and dominated the scramble game to gain 1 point. The match was halved 1-1/2 to 1-1/2!  Awesome match!

These were some truly fantastic matches! Thanks to all players for making this such a superb Ryder Cup Event! After the dust had settled, Team Europe won the Ryder Cup Tournament and retained the “Cup” 10 -8! Congratulations to captains’ Mike Holland, Glenn Dobson, Jim Congleton and the rest of Team Europe! Job well done!!
