Annual Ed McFadden Memorial Scholarship Tournament & Tuskegee Airmen Appreciation Day! Del Val’s first solo scholarship tournament was tremendous! Gentlemen – start your engines! The new logo water bottles a big hit! Lots of prizes and awards given away! The Tuskegee Airmen ceremony hits a little bit of a snag! A special thanks goes out to all Del Valians & guests who benevolently gave to the Del Val Scholarship Fund! Annual Ed McFadden Memorial Scholarship Tournament & Tuskegee Airmen Appreciation Day!
Del Val’s Maiden Voyage as host of The Ed McFadden Scholarship Tournament was a smashing success!! The turnout was slightly lighter than anticipated due to numerous reasons, but the spirit was good, fun & networking was great and the golf was tough at the challenging Odessa Golf Course! The course played tough this day as the trees, strong winds and abundance of bunkers made life difficult for all despite the fact it was a scramble format. The first 3 low gross teams got awards for all their troubles!
On an ideal day for golf with temperatures in the mid-70′s and slightly overcast skies, a contingent of 30 golfers made the trek to the awesome Odessa National Golf Club!
The best score of the day was turned in by the foursome of Reggie Pollitt, Raymond Greir, Chandler Horton and Arnold Young. Arnold’s group put on a great display of driving and putting to post a score of 63.
There was a 3 -way tie for second place with scores of 65. The places were determined by the tie-breaker which was based on scores recorded on the toughest handicapped holes. After that tabulation, the results were as follows:
- Second place went the foursome of Jim Dillard, Willie Flynn, Joe Johnson and Anton Burnette. They played a solid round and carded a 65.
- Third place went to the foursome of Tony Wright, Pete Goodwin, John Jones, Ed Wilcox. They also had a nice round and posted the 65 score too.
The team left out in the cold but played a good round was the foursome of Jim Congleton, John St. Omer, Shawn Congleton, Herb Morris.
The Scarabis Golf Club from the consortium sent a foursome to the participate in and support the Del Val Scholarship Tournament. A lot of the other consortium clubs, including DC Pro Duffers and Nova Pro Duffers and the DC and Nova Pro Duffers Chapters had schedule conflicts but all have pledged their support and schedule coordination for next year’s tournament.
So, we’re only going to get bigger and better!!! Next Year Will Be Massive!!
Important Note:
The Scarabis Club has invited Del Val Members to play in their Charity Tournament on Saturday, May 19, at an outstanding golf course in Virginia called The 1557 Golf Club! A splendid golf course! We are looking to take down at least 2 foursomes. If interested, let me know at yitc@aol.com. Scarabis is real supportive of our events, so let’s reciprocate!
Tuskegee Airman and Del Valian Ted Ramsey displays his official Tuskegee blazer and “Wings”!
On his way to the Tuskegee Airmen Ceremony in his honor, Ted Ramsey chose to take the scenic Route and drove nearly to Virginia on Route 1 instead of Townsend, DE. He finally got his bearings and made it back to Odessa National. Only problem was, it was so late that everyone had already left except a few. The members that were still at the course received Ted and presented him with his Lifetime Achievement Award and gift baskets made in his and Tom Mayfield Sr’s honor.
Ted was nice enough to stay an hour or so and explained to the ones remaining, Mike Holland, Glenn Dobson, Arnold Young and Guests Jerry Detweiler and Vince Storti, the complete story and his history in The Tuskegee Airmen Squadron. Ted is a “Wealth of Knowledge about his personal Tuskegee Experience.” if you ever get a chance, pull him aside and ask him about the airmen. He would only be too delighted to tell you. His pride at being a Tuskegee Airmen is boundless!
The other Tuskegee Airmen, Tom Mayfield Sr. was hospitalized last week and was supposed to be released yesterday, Sunday; therefore, he was unable to attend. Tom’s Del Val Lifetime Achievement Award and Gift Basket was taken to him by Gil Spriggs.
Thanks Ted and Tom!!!! Job well done!!!!
